In his last five fights, Brett Rogers has faced a murderer’s row that has included Andrei Arlovski, Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett. Thankfully, the likeable big guy who was once changing tires at a Sam’s Club has made some good money competing on the big stage.
Rogers -- who submitted to Barnett in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix on Saturday in Dallas -- deserves a rebuilding phase and an opponent outside of the Top 20. Fighters’ careers are defined by a weird mix of opportunity and circumstance, and not too many heavyweights could have faced those four men and done any better than Rogers.
At 30, Rogers is now 11-3 and still has a lot of ability. He deserves time to develop his game. Hopefully, the powers that be at Strikeforce feel the same way.
