Junior welterweight contender Eddie Ramirez survived an early scare in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions’ latest show on Fox Sports 1 to topple Kevin Watts in dramatic fashion.
Ramirez walked into a well-timed uppercut to the jaw in the second and was taken off his feet. But once Ramirez (15-0, 10 KOs) climbed back to his feet, it was all downhill for Watts. Ramirez took the fight to his foe and pressed him relentless, eventually wearing Watts down and trimming his defense. Finally, with Watts (11-1, 4 KOs) reeling in an effort to keep Ramirez off him, a booming shot to the dome floored him for good, electrifying the crowd inside the Robinson Rancheria Resort and Casino in Nice, California. The official time of the knockout was 1:37 of the seventh.
In the PBC on FS1 co-feature, super middleweight Marcos Hernandez remained unbeaten as he edged Antonio Urista over eight rounds. Hernandez (9-0, 2 KOs) dominated Urista with his movement and handspeed throughout as we won virtually every minute of every round. Urista (7-2, 2 KOs) was docked a point in the fifth for repeatedly spitting out his mouthpiece but in the end, the infraction was simply mathematic; Hernandez won easily via scores of 80-71 (twice) and 79-72.
Undefeated featherweight prospect Leduan Barthelemy improved to 11-0 (6) after eking out a surprisingly close split decision over Ricardo Nunez (4-2, 2 KOs). Barthelemy, the younger brother of unbeaten IBF lightweight champion Rances Barthelemy, was expected to mow down Nunez, but he struggled to find a rhythm throughout and barely got the win. In the end, two judges saw it for Barthelemy 77-75 while the third had it for Nunez 79-73.
