SRN Rewind Preview: Joseph Benavidez
On Sept. 22, Joseph
Benavidez will vie to become the UFC's very first flyweight
champion. Despite the gravity of the opportunity, he's as mellow
and clear-headed as ever. His teammates call him an "old soul"
because of this quieted nature, which is reflected in his love for
board games, breakfast cereal, and dated music.
He became this person as part of a quest to stop drinking and abusing drugs, as the other men in his family did.
The 16-2 Benavidez had a similarly intense sense of purpose when he
shipped out to California to train with Urijah
Faber. Not only did he never quite go back to the way it used
to be, but it’s been an open road ever since. That's significant,
because there was a time when it looked like Benavidez might have
been trapped on a dead end.
