Derrick Lewis lived dangerously for a round, and then he let his power take over.

“The Black Beast” earned a second-round technical knockout victory against Alexey Oleynik in the UFC Fight Night 174 headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday night — but it wasn’t without some adversity. Lewis elected to grapple with his Russian foe for much of the opening five minutes, and he survived through a couple of precarious moments. He only needed 21 seconds to impose his will in Round 2, following a massive right with ferocious ground-and-pound for his third consecutive triumph.

15: UFC triumphs for Lewis, tying him with Junior dos Santos for third most in the history of the heavyweight division. Only Andrei Arlovski (18) and Frank Mir (16) have won more at heavyweight. Lewis is the only one of those four men not to have captured UFC gold.

11: Knockout victories in UFC competition for Lewis, the most in the history of the heavyweight division. That total also ties him with Anderson Silva, Matt Brown, Anthony Johnson and Thiago Santos for second most of any fighter in the promotion. Vitor Belfort is No.1 with 12 KO victories in the Octagon.

33: Significant strikes by which Lewis outlanded Oleynik. “The Black Beast” outlanded his foe 13 to 2 in Round 1 and 22 to 0 in Round 2.

30: Significant ground strikes landed by Lewis. By comparison, Oleynik landed just one.

2: Submission attempts by Oleynik in Round 1. The Russian twice applied scarf hold headlocks to no avail against his opponent, who was able to survive a tight squeeze and make it to the second frame.

1,113: Days since Chris Weidman’s last UFC triumph, a third-round submission against Kelvin Gastelum on July 22, 2017. The former middleweight champion returned to the win column with a decision triumph over Omari Akhmedov in the UFC Fight Night 174 co-main event.

16: Takedowns attempted by Weidman, a career high for the “The All-American” in his UFC tenure. Weidman landed five of those attempts, which proved to be key to his victory. Akhmedov, meanwhile, landed four of eight takedowns, with all of his successful attempts coming in Round 2.

209: Total strikes landed by Yana Kunitskaya in a clear-cut unanimous decision triumph over Julija Stoliarenko at bantamweight. The Russian outlanded her foe 64 to 18 in Round 1, 92 to 2 in Round 2 and 53 to 10 in Round 3. Her total strike differential of 179 is the largest in the history of the UFC women’s bantamweight division.

10:02: Unofficial cllinch control time for Kunitskaya, who rarely disguised her intentions for forcing her opponent into a close-quarters battle.

8: Spinning backfist finishes in UFC history after Beneil Dariush used the maneuver to dispatch Scott Holtzman 4:38 into the opening round of their lightweight clash. The others: Shonie Carter, John Makdessi, Paul Felder, Douglas Silva de Andrade, Aleksandar Rakic, Johnny Walker, and Steven Peterson.

4: Consecutive finishes in the Octagon for Dariush, tying him with Justin Gaethje and Francis Ngannou for the second-longest active finishing streak in the Las Vegas-based promotion. Charles Oliveira holds the top spot with seven consecutive finishes.

1: KO/TKO defeat in 18 professional outings for Holtzman, who was finished for the first time in his career on Saturday night.

4.02: Knockdowns per 15 minutes for Kevin Holland in his last two UFC appearances, technical knockout victories over Joaquin Buckley and Kevin Holland. Holland floored Buckley twice en route to a stoppage 32 seconds into the third round of their middleweight encounter.

104: Significant strikes landed by Nasrat Haqparast in a three-round verdict over Alex Munoz at lightweight. That’s the second most in six UFC appearances for the Tristar gym product. By comparison, Munoz landed 37 significant strikes.

93: Significant head strikes for Haqparast, who spent the vast majority of the contest headhunting against Munoz.

1: KO/TKO victory in eight UFC appearances for Andrew Sanchez, who stopped Wellington Turman in the opening round of their middleweight matchup. “The Ultimate Fighter 23” winner’s first four Octagon triumphs all came via unanimous decision.

87: Significant strikes landed by Gavin Tucker en route to a third-round submission of Justin Jaynes in a preliminary featherweight clash. That included a 63-to-6 advantage in a dominant Round 2.

3: UFC victories in 2020 for Youssef Zalal, making him the first fighter this year to earn three victories in the Octagon. The 23-year-old earned a clear-cut decision win over Peter Barrett at featherweight.

8: Total knockdowns at UFC Fight Night 174. That ties it with UFC on ESPN 8 “Overeem vs. Harris” for the most knockdowns on a card in 2020. The overall record for knockdowns landed on a single card is 15, at UFC 199.
