Sherdog.com ‘s Guide to The Ultimate Fighter

Last week Josh Haynes (Pictures) won a pretty even bout with Tait Fletcher (Pictures) and moved on to the semifinals. Once again Team Tito prevailed but Ken Shamrock (Pictures)'s team isn't about to mope around.

Instead, they head off to the Hard Rock Cafe for some bowling and chicken wings! Just like your t-ball coach used to do, Ken likes to treat his guy's to some snacks win or lose because it's all about participation and teamwork.

Once at the Hard Rock the team and their coach are surprised with a birthday cake from Ken's wife and they have a small party for the guy. Then, in Shamrock family tradition, they all take turns giving Ken 42 leg locks to mark his age.

Honestly, I have no idea how old he was when this show was shot and I'm too lazy to research. So back off you fact turds.

Moving on, all season long on The Ultimate Fighter 3, Tito Ortiz (Pictures) has needled Ed Herman (Pictures). First he decided not to choose Ed for his team — which really burnt Ed's chili. Ed's been fuming about it since and just to keep him fuming, Tito has spent the past few weeks teasing Ed by not choosing him to fight his best men at 185.

Now there are only two guys left at that weight that haven't fought: Ed, the scorned, and Danny Abaddi, who was chosen last for Tito's team. As you might imagine this has Ed frothing at the mouth to get to Danny and show up Tito for his disrespect.

I mean my gosh, Tito has been at the pinnacle of MMA for years but the audacity he's shown by not giving the proper respect deserved of a man who has fought in the famed Pacific Pankration Kickboxing Association!

I mean honestly Tito, how could you? Don't you remember that famous line from "To Kill a Mockingbird"?

"…stand up Scout, your dad, the former lightweight champion of the Pacific Pankration Kickboxing Association is entering the room."

OK, I'm just busting balls here. I like Ed and I figure the guy probably does have some clout, being a Team Quest member and all. But I'm still not sure why it matters whether or not Tito and Ken know that. Either way, it doesn't matter because tonight we get to see if Ed's worth all the hype.

Ed's opponent, Danny, is one of the quieter members of the show. Well quiet according to earlier editing, tonight we are treated to several moments of Danny yapping like a babysitter on the phone. Danny teaches karate somewhere in Florida and may have his hands full when it comes to a ground war. If some of you threw out your computers after reading "karate" I apologize.

While Danny trains to keep this fight standing, Ed is back at the mansion getting in a bubble bath that of course turns into a bubble-wrestling match with Kendall. Ed takes this time to warn anyone that if they think that little scenario is fruity, they should ask him about it in the street. Well Ed, don't worry, I don't think anyone is going to accuse you of "brokeback" tendencies and you have Heath Herring (Pictures) to thank for that.

Danny is dealing with some lower back pain as the fight grows near. His team and coach have their suspicions about it. Danny starts to mysteriously disappear the house at odd times, leaving Ed and the other guys to speculate on his whereabouts. Danny is in fact at the doctor's office getting his lower lumbar looked at, but says that he'll fight no matter what injuries he may have.

Matt Hamill is still perturbing some of his teammates. What can you say, these guys are stuck living together with strangers you will eventually hate everything they do. But I find some attendant irony in Michael Bisping (Pictures) being annoyed with Matt being loud. I'm beginning to think that Matt, being deaf, is the luckiest man in the house.

Saul Soliz is a Team Ortiz assistant coach and he decides during training to help simulate for Danny what to expect from Ed. He starts shoving Danny with a heavy bag on the ground behind him, causing Danny to fall on his rump against the fence. They continue this over and over and discuss what damage may or may not occur to Danny's back. Every time Danny falls down I chuckle and after the 10th chuckle I realize that I'm a very pathetic individual.

After both men complete the weigh-in formalities they retreat to the house to ready themselves mentally. I'd like to take this time to pose the question? Why do fighters always start shadowboxing when they talk about fighting? It seems that every time someone mentions the word “octagon,” these guys start ducking their heads and throwing a couple of one-twos.

I mean I guess it makes sense but does your doctor pretend he's cutting when he's talking about neurosurgery? What if every time a bus driver got to talking about his day, he put his hands at 3 and 9? It would kind of be awesome really, seeing the architect lay out his drawings, watching your landscape guy walk with an imaginary lawnmower. It's something to consider.

The fight is finally upon us and according to all the sound bites, Ed is going to hand Danny his ass, but as the first round begins Ed catches a right on his chin that makes his makes his whole team grit their teeth.

Ed recovers and Danny looks like he might be looking to put a good scrap together, as he keeps Ed away from clinching for, oh, about six seconds. Then he inexplicably bear hugs Ed and pushes him back to the fence. Even Stevie Wonder can see what will happen next. Ed raises his leg and rolls Danny over on his head and gets into Danny's guard.

For most of the rest of round one Ed is dropping occasional punches and hard elbows on Danny, who has his legs crossed around Ed. But it's time to face facts folks, a guard is only a guard if you are guarding. If a guy is able to posture up and drop on you, try a new tactic.

Unfortunately for Danny he's just too green on the ground to know this and he eats blows until finally making a move to roll over and leave his arm up in the air.

Ed looks at the arm like a prime rib. He takes the arm easily and secures the armbar, causing Danny to tap real fast.

Now Team Shamrock has snapped the losing streak and next week we'll get to see Matt Hamill do his thing against Mike Nickels.

Stay tuned.
