Sherdog.com’s Guide to the Ultimate Fighter

Last week on The Ultimate Fighter, Din Thomas (Pictures) slapped a triangle choke on Mikey Burnett and quickly dispatched him. This gave Team Mojo back control of the fight choices.

With only four middleweights remaining, each fighter is anxious to find out if they will be fighting.

Jorge Rivera (Pictures) wants a piece of Pete Sell (Pictures). He feels like it's a great match-up for him and is eager for the fight. Patrick Cote (Pictures) is still around, as is Charles McCarthy (Pictures). Speaking of Mr. McCarthy, while everyone else kids around after the Burnett-Thomas fight, Charles sits motionless with his head down. Serra asks him what’s up and McCarthy laments that he's upset over the loss of his roommate.

For this, he is openly mocked.

Back at the house the abuse continues as everyone begins to bitch about how much McCarthy bitches. He's given the moniker "Captain Miserable" and a cape is made for him. Then the good TUF producers show a montage of McCarthy dropping "Debbie Downer" lines.

To make sure that he is kept miserable, someone writes "personality" on Charles's grocery wish list. Now under normal circumstances most people would laugh at that, but of course this isn't normal; it's reality television.

McCarthy takes it way too personal and does some detective work. Like a good FBI handwriting expert, Charles goes through the other fighter's grocery lists until he finds who he thinks is the culprit.

Soon, Pete Sell (Pictures) is somewhat confronted by Charles when he remarks, "if we have some kind of beef then." Pete cuts Charles short by telling him that he wasn't the guy he's looking for. Meanwhile Shonie Carter (Pictures) is giggling since he is the kind of guy that would do such a monstrous act.

Shonie, you vile beast!

While Jorge and Charles sweat over who will be picked to fight one of the Mojo boys, Randy Couture (Pictures) shows up unannounced at the house, causing a small stir. He asks to speak to Jorge and then gives him the welcomed news of the birth of a baby girl. Randy hands over a picture phone and let's daddy see his girl for the first time. The guys all congratulate him and we have one of our few pure moments of television on any channel.

Back at the training center, the fights are announced and Pete Sell (Pictures) steps forward to challenge McCarthy. Looks like the "beef" will have a chance to surface in the end. After the selection is made, Rich Franklin (Pictures) is introduced as a special temporary coach for the week. The guys seem glad to see him until they hear that the winner of the 185 class will face him after the show. Something to look forward to! Working hard to get back into the Octagon only to get possibly murdered for your trouble.

So now it's time to look back at the history of tonight's two combatants.

Charles explains about his only fight in the UFC, when he took on David Loiseau (Pictures). Not a lot of people beat Mr. Loiseau it would seem, so you can guess who won that fight. Charles was holding his own until his belly caught a foot that gave him bitter beer face.

Pete Sell (Pictures)'s two UFC appearances were also shown. Pete was the author of a great upset over Phil Baroni (Pictures) in his first UFC when he was able to choke Phil out and pull off one of the bigger upsets in the past few years.

Fast forward past the tale of the tape and the usual training clips and it's fight time.

Round one and Drago throws a few hard punches that stymie a takedown attempt by McCarthy. Pete launches a barrage that causes Charles to try and clinch. Pete quickly tosses Charles onto his back and McCarthy goes for a leg lock. Pete sits on him to keep him from getting any leverage.

While Charles holds on, Pete throws an occasional punch to any place he can find meat. Eventually Pete is able to get his leg out and while both men try to reposition, Charles lets out a yelp and Pete seizes the moment, coming down hard with a punch from the sky that rocks Charles a bit.

Charles might be in trouble as he rolls over and balls up on all fours with his head buried in between his elbows for cover. Pete peppers him with shots to the head while Charles stays defensive. Charles knows he's in a bad spot, so he rolls forward causing Pete to fall into an almost-guard that just has Charles holding on to tie him up. After a quick stall Charles is able to wiggle his way back up to a standing position.

He looked good for a second there but once again Charles ends up on the ground, covering up while Pete smacks him around until the round ends.

Just about as soon as the second round begins, Pete catches Charles with his head down and finds a guillotine that's sunk deep. How deep, you say? Deep enough that James Cameron wants to make a movie about it.

Pete keeps holding on, waiting for the inevitable tap or unconscious opponent, but Charles is on this show for a reason. He's able to stay cognizant and eventually Pete has to let go. Pete's worn out from straining and allows Charles to get on top in his half guard.

From this position, Charles starts to go to work on Pete's left arm. Pete stays calm down below and fends off Kimuras or any other detrimental act. Charles stayed on top for the rest of the time and sporadically punches Pete in the ribs and side. Charles's team admonishes him to elbow Pete and eventually he does get a few in but the round is over.

Charles was admirably able to get some control back, and while he didn't dish out too much damage he kept Pete from being able to do anything either. The judges come back with a decision to go to an extra round. It's a relief that we are at least going to see something of a fight tonight.

Once the tie-breaking round begins it is clear who wants it more. Pete has been the more aggressive fighter tonight and he decides to finish strong. He starts to connect with some of his punches and forces Charles into the fence. Charles covers up while Pete tags him with hard rights to the body. Pete then misses wildly with a haymaker and finds himself clinched up again with Charles.

Sell smartly puts Charles on his back again and begins to work him over some more. Charles starts getting some reconstruction on his face as Pete is able to pummel him with punches, elbows and forearms. Charles is bleeding and watching the fight slip away but somehow he is able to slip out of Sell's side-mount and reverse to being on top. It doesn't last long though and Matt Serra (Pictures)'s prize student goes for an omoplata.

Charles could be in trouble again. With only a few seconds left in the round he reverses the hold and traps Sell's arm but the fight is over.

While two rounds may have been a toss up, Pete Sell (Pictures) is able to take over in the third and takes home the well-fought decision. Charles isn't pleased with the outcome and Pete is able to celebrate with his boys.

Next week Matt Serra (Pictures) will finally step into the Octagon and take on Pete Spratt (Pictures) in what should be a great fight. Should be, cross your fingers. Looks like "Negative Nancy" Charles McCarthy (Pictures) is still bummed out after his loss and will be the subject of more pranks. So if you don't care about the Spratt-Serra fight, you should at least tune in just to watch someone get humiliated by his peers.

It's as American as apple pie and morbid obesity.
