Bellator’s Usman Nurmagomedov Arrested for Allegedly Hitting Police Officer with Car

Bellator MMA lightweight prospect Usman Nurmagomedov has been taken into custody for reportedly running a police officer over at an airport in Russia.

Early Thursday morning, Rusen Press posted a document that included a potential mugshot for Nurmagomedov and a friend, while noting that he had been detained under suspicion of “crushing a police officer.” Russian outlet TASS then reported that Nurmagomedov and friend Kamal Idrisov had indeed been arrested at the Kaspiysk airport.

Per the press office of a department of the Russian Interior Ministry, “They are suspected of running over a policeman with a car at the checkpoint of Kaspiysk Airport.”

According to the report, two men in a Toyota Camry with tinted windows and no license plates were requested to stop for an airport checkpoint at 11:30 a.m. locally. The driver, who was not identified, did not stop, and instead ran over a security barrier and a police officer, injuring the officer. A criminal case has been opened by the Russian Investigation Committee on the matter.

Bellator has since provided a statement about the allegations to multiple outlets.

“The promotion has been made aware of a situation involving Usman Nurmagomedov and is in the process of gathering information. We will have no further comment at this time,” the brief statement wrote.

An unbeaten fighter at 14-0, including a trio of victories under the Bellator banner, Nurmagomedov last appeared at Bellator 269 in October. In front of a home crowd, the 23-year-old cousin of Khabib Nurmagomedov throttled Patrik Pietila with a rear-naked choke in the opening frame. As a professional, Nurmagomedov holds a finish rate of 86%, with stoppages in seven of his last eight outings.
