UFC 146 Medical Suspensions: Velasquez, ‘Pezao’ Face Potential 6-Month Layoffs
Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain
Velasquez could be out up to six months following his technical
knockout of Antonio
Silva at UFC
146 last Saturday night.
Nevada Athletic Commission officials Tuesday informed Sherdog.com that Velasquez must undergo an X-ray on his left hand. If the heavyweight’s appendage is broken, he will face six months on the shelf, though he may be cleared early by a physician. Regardless, the NAC issued the American Kickboxing Academy ace a minimum suspension of one month.
Silva, who absorbed a flurry of hard shots in his co-headlining
affair with Velasquez, must undergo a nasal X-ray. If those results
come back positive, Silva must also sit out until Nov. 20 unless he
is cleared early by a physician.
UFC 146 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and was headlined by a heavyweight title bout between reigning champion Junior dos Santos and former belt holder Frank Mir. “Cigano” knocked Mir out in the second round of their five-frame main event, sending the former champion to the mat with a hard right straight and finishing the job with a hammer fist. Mir received a two-month suspension from the NAC.
