‘Chocolatito’ Moves Up to 115 Pounds, Faces WBC Champ Cuadras Sep. 10
It looks like pound-for-pound king and WBC flyweight world champion
Roman Gonzalez has gotten too big for his weight class and has
decided to move up to 11 pounds for his next bout.
K2 Promotions and Teiken Promotions announced Wednesday that “Chocolatito” will take on WBC super flyweight titlist Carlos Cuadras on Sep. 10 at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, Calif. just outside Los Angeles. HBO will televise the bout at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
Gonzalez (45-0, 38 KOs) has been flattening nearly everybody he’s
faced and has become arguably the greatest fighter in the world
pound-for-pound. He captured his current world championship by
stopping Akira Yaegashi almost two years ago. The Nicaraguan has
defended his crown four times, three via knockout. He most recently
fought in April where he dominated McWilliams Arroyo, winning
virtually every round for a lopsided unanimous decision.
After already winning the WBA minimumweight title and WBA junior flyweight belt before conquering the 112-pound landscape, now he climbs up three pounds in an effort to take over a new weight class.
“I’ve very happy to challenge Carlos Cuadras for a world title in my fourth weight class. It’s an honor to return to fight at the Forum in front of the great Los Angeles fight fans,” said Gonzalez. “Thanks very much to God, K2 Promotions, Mr. Honda and HBO for making this happen.”
Cuadras (35-0-1, 27 KOs) is a fierce Mexican brawler who dominated the regional scene in his native country before becoming a world champion. He scored a technical eight-round decision over Wisaksil Wangek (aka Srisaket Sor Rungvisai) to win the belt two years ago and has defended it six times.
“I am excited to fight in the United States for the first time on HBO and at the legendary Forum in front of the great boxing fans in California,” Cuadras said. “Roman Gonzalez is a great champion and I have a lot of respect for him. I will prepare myself to be in the best condition of my boxing career to defend my WBC belt.”
