Keenan Cornelius to Battle Matheus Diniz in Five Super League Event July 15
One of the world’s greatest jiu-jitsu players will take on another
elite grappler as Keenan Cornelius will collide with Matheus Diniz
in the main event of Five Super League “The Lightweights.” The
event goes down on July 15 at Lincoln High School in San Diego,
Calif., and the promotion revealed the first names of the card’s
grand prix Thursday afternoon.
Cornelius, who trains out of SoCal powerhouse Atos Jiu-Jitsu, has been taking the grappling world by storm the past few years. At 25, Cornelius has already racked up the double gold grand slam in the IBJJF, where he won his weight class and the open class at the European, Brazilian Nationals, Pan and the Worlds in 2012.
Diniz, who reps Marcelo Garcia out of New York, the Brazilian has
snatched up countless medals on the jiu jitsu circuit. He captured
gold in the IBJJF in ’13,’14 and ’15, including the Pan American
championship in no-gi and as a brown belt.
The Cornelius-Diniz bout is scheduled for 10 minutes in a no-gi submission-only match. If neither man scores a sub during the allotted 10 minutes, they will battle for an additional five minutes where points, not advantages, will be scored. Whoever has the most points after those five minutes conclude will be the winner.
Five Super League will also include an eight-man lightweight grand prix with some of the best jiu-jitsu players in the world. So far, the promotion has five stars of the sort on board: Gianni Grippo, Lucas Pinheiro, Shane Hill, Sinistro Ituualde and Brandon Walensky have been confirmed for the tourney. The final three competitors will be announced shortly.
Rounding out the card will be a series of matches between world-rated black belts. Talita Alencar will take on Aarae Alexander; Yan Lucas will collide with Johnny Tama; Nick Schrock will oppose Horlando Monteiro; Tara White will face Jessica Oliveira; and Marcelo Mafra will go up against Richie Martinez. The event will be streamed live on Flograppling.com beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT.
