This Day in MMA History: Sept. 2

On Sept. 2, 2010, Bellator MMA, then called Bellator Fighting Championship, hit the road to San Antonio for Bellator 27.

In the main event, Joe Warren knocked out Joe Soto in the second round to become the new featherweight champion. It was also the first time he won the Bellator title and went on to capture it two more times and fought for it six times in his career.

Soto never won a title in a major promotion again. He went on to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight crown at UFC 177 but was knocked out by T.J. Dillashaw. The only other he won was the Tachi Palace Fights bantamweight strap.

The card also featured a plethora of soon to be UFC fighters. Opening up the card is now UFC featherweight Steven Peterson, who beat Ernest de la Cruz by decision. Middleweight Andrew Craig also went 3-4 inside the Octagon. In the bantamweight quarterfinals, Zach Makovsky, who went on to go 3-4, in the UFC, beat Nick Mamalis by decision. The other UFC fighter on the card that joined the Las Vegas-based promotion was Ulysses Gomez, who lost both of his bouts.

Bellator 27 had just 600 people in attendance.
