Legacies do not come any more complicated than the one Josh Barnett has built.

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pancrase titleholder’s place in history will remain forever difficult to quantify due to multiple positive tests for anabolic steroids during his career. Barnett, who owns a 35-8 record with 29 finishes, agreed to a multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA in 2019 but has yet to compete under the auspices of the Scott Coker-led company. His future grows murkier by the day. More than five years have now passed since Barnett’s last appearance inside the cage—a third-round rear-naked choke submission of Andrei Arlovski in the UFC Fight Night 93 main event on Sept. 3, 2016.

As the mixed martial arts world awaits word on his next move, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied “The Warmaster” to this point:

43: Years of age for Barnett, who was born on Nov. 10, 1977 in Seattle.

19: Barnett victories by submission, accounting for 54% of his career total (35). His methods of choice: five armbars, four rear-naked chokes, three kimuras, three arm-triangle chokes, one triangle armbar, one keylock, one toe hold and one heel hook. Barnett owns 10 other victories by knockout or technical knockout, another by disqualification and five more by decision.

146: Significant strikes landed by Barnett in a unanimous decision over Roy Nelson in the UFC Fight Night 75 main event on Sept. 26, 2015. It ranks as the sixth-highest total ever recorded by a heavyweight inside the Octagon.

4: Countries in which Barnett has competed as a mixed martial artist. He has gone 20-4 in the United States, 13-4 in Japan, 1-0 in Australia and 1-0 in Germany.

8: Consecutive finishes for Barnett between June 29, 2001 and May 22, 2004. Still the longest such streak of his career, it saw the Erik Paulson protégé stop Semmy Schilt, Bobby Hoffman, Randy Couture, Jimmy Ambriz, Yuki Kondo, Kazuo Takahashi and Rene Rooze in succession. Barnett submitted the 6-foot-11 Schilt twice with armbars.

126: Days spent by Barnett as undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder. He laid claim to the crown with a second-round technical knockout of Couture at UFC 36 on March 22, 2002, only to be stripped of the belt due to a failed drug test on July 26, 2002.

13: Promotions in which Barnett has recorded at least one win. They are the UFC, Pride Fighting Championships, Strikeforce, United Full Contact Federation, SuperBrawl, New Japan Pro Wrestling, Pancrase, Inoki Genome Federation, K-1, Sengoku, Affliction, Dream and Impact Fighting Championship.

122: Seconds needed for Barnett to submit onetime K-1 World Grand Prix winner Mark Hunt with a kimura at Pride Critical Countdown Absolute on July 1, 2006. Having occurred in the quarterfinals of the Pride heavyweight grand prix, it remains the fastest finish of his 43-fight career.

7: Americans, including Barnett, who have held championships in the Pancrase organization. Nate Marquardt, Ricardo Almeida, Nam Phan, Andy Main, Ken Shamrock and Guy Mezger are the others.

.743: Cumulative winning percentage between the six men—Pedro Rizzo, Mirko Filipovic, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Daniel Cormier, Travis Browne and Ben Rothwell—who have defeated Barnett. They boast a combined record of 171-55-4. Filipovic was responsible for three of Barnett’s eight losses.
