Jon Fitch has not stepped into a mixed martial arts cage in 14 months. After his Bellator 220 draw with former Bellator MMA welterweight champion Rory MacDonald, there was some doubt as to whether or not the 42-year-old would return to action again. However, with the world economy on shaky ground and the competitive fires still burning within him, the onetime World Series of Fighting titleholder plans to stay busy in the second half of 2020.
“I’m probably going to try and fight because I like it, and there’s a lot of people who want to watch fights [and] could benefit from a distraction from everything that’s going on,” Fitch told Sherdog.com. “We don’t know what’s going on with our economy here in this country. The rumor is that Bellator wants to do weekly shows once they can go, so if I can squeeze in a few fights before Christmas, why not? I was just informed two weeks ago that Bellator was probably going to start doing shows in mid-July.”
In this exclusive interview with Sherdog, Fitch talks about his podcast work, provides his thoughts on the recent push for increased pay by current Ultimate Fighting Championship stars Jon Jones and Jorge Masvidal, touches on the influence of the UFC machine and outlines the role he played in a pivotal era of welterweight history.
